Why we will not publish a price list

Every scrap site you will find quotes a rate per kilo. Most of those numbers were typed once and never touched again.

Lead is a traded commodity. What a battery is worth this week is not what it was worth last month, and anyone promising a fixed figure is either about to disappoint you at the door or has built the gap into their margin. We tell you the rate for today, before we come, and we weigh in front of you so you can check the arithmetic yourself.

Batteries are not e-waste, legally speaking

This trips up a lot of businesses, and a fair number of collectors. Waste batteries are not governed by the E-Waste (Management) Rules 2022. They fall under the Battery Waste Management Rules 2022, a separate set of rules that replaced the Batteries (Management and Handling) Rules 2001.

Those rules run on Extended Producer Responsibility, require waste batteries to be collected and sent for recycling or refurbishment, and prohibit disposing of them in landfill or by incineration outright.

In practice, for an ordinary business, the point is simple: the pile of dead UPS batteries in your store room is a separate compliance question from the pile of old desktops next to it, and handing both to whoever turns up first does not settle either. Damaged and swollen cells

A swollen, leaking or punctured lithium cell is a fire risk, not just scrap. It needs to be packed and carried differently, and a driver should not be finding out about it when he opens the box.

Tell us when you book. We would far rather send the right vehicle and the right packing than have an incident on the road. We will still take it — we just want to know first.

Where they go

Batteries we collect are routed into authorised handling rather than sold on into the informal trade, where lead-acid batteries are commonly broken open and drained. That is the part of this business that does real environmental damage, and it is the reason the chain matters more than the price.

What is the rate for inverter and UPS batteries?

Do you take damaged or swollen lithium batteries?

Tell us before we come. A swollen or punctured lithium cell is a fire risk and has to be packed and carried differently from a lead-acid battery. We would rather plan for it than have a driver discover it in the boot.

Are batteries covered by the e-waste rules?

No, and this catches a lot of people out. Waste batteries fall under the Battery Waste Management Rules 2022, which replaced the 2001 rules and are separate from the E-Waste (Management) Rules 2022. Landfilling and incineration of batteries are prohibited outright.

Can you take batteries with the rest of our old equipment?

Yes. Most office clear-outs are a mix of IT equipment, UPS units and the batteries inside them, and it is one collection. We record the battery weight separately because it is priced separately.
